Joe McInroy overlaid on painters pallete.

Joe, surrounded by trees, painting.Artist Joe McInroy has lived in Helvetia, West Virginia, since 1972.  He has been painting and drawing since 1992 when he went back to college (Fairmont State) and studied graphics and fine arts.  He had previously graduated from Davis and Elkins College in 1971 as an English education major, taught high school English at Pickens School for four years, and then started a woodworking business which lasted for 15 years.

Joe’s style is mostly realistic, sometimes impressionistic.  He started painting at age 45 after becoming entrenched in West Virginia topography and culture.  He says, “I hope that the colors and textures of my work speak of the hardiness and vigor of life in these mountains.  I like to think of each painting as a lyric poem or song and each scene as a romantic vision.

Joe likes to work mostly with oil paints, sometimes pastels, and occasionally with watercolors or mixed media.  The landscapes in this gallery are subjects close to home, scenes located within a five-mile radius of his home in Helvetia.

In his spare time, Joe likes to participate in local cultural events, especially with folk music.  He plays guitar for Helvetia dances, and directs and accompanies the Helvetia singers and yodelers.  He also likes fly fishing, hiking and camping.  He has two grown daughters and one grandson.  His wife, Natalie, is a retired postmaster.
